Over the Counter

Imaginatively-lit, Zouk tea bar and grill appears to be a magnet for passers-by on Bradford's Leeds Road. It always seems busy and I have intended to stop many a time, but worried about the possible wait for a take-away. This time I rang in advance.

I parked outside and was greeted at the bar by a friendly member of staff who invited me to try the non-alcoholic drink he was making, using milk, yoghurt, sugar and ice. It was delicious, and I hoped the meal - vegetarian Bombay aloo for me and chicken jalfrezi for my husband - would be as enjoyable. I need not have worried.

This is the best Indian meal I've had in ages, said my husband. I had to agree - we shared each dish and the combination of spicy potato, rice (which is included) and perfectly-cooked chicken was just right. The naan bread we shared was light and tasty, and a small side salad tempered the heat from the curries.

There was just the right amount to fill the gap, without that leaden-stomach feeling which sometimes lingers after a take-away. The bill came to a reasonable £14.95. Zouk is an award-winning restaurant, and I can see why. I will certainly be returning for more.
